The newest addition to the Coastal Heritage Society's impressive selection of historical and cultural museums, the Savannah Children's Museum opened its doors in the summer of 2012. Adhering to the principle of learning through play, the first of two phases of the open-air museum features two vintage railcars, one serving as a group space for birthday parties and the other as a nursing/changing station. In the open green space are several stations geared for sensory play,
including a water/sand play excavation station, sound station of percussion instruments, and an organic sensory garden. The storybook nook is a partnership with the Savannah public library and encourages visiting youngsters to balance physical play with mental. Phase II, due for completion in 2013, will more than double the size of the museum. Call for the latest hours and admission. Enter through the Georgia State Railroad Museum.
