Built in 1906 on the site of the Old City Exchange (1799-1904), this imposing structure anchors Bay Street. Its landmark tower clock and bells once played a significant role in the day-to-day business of Savannah, since the pocket watch was not mass-produced until 1897. In 2006, in honor of its centennial, this monumental municipal building underwent interior and exterior renovation. The public is welcome to come in and admire its dramatic four-story rotunda crowned with a stained-glass inner dome, mosaic tiles, marble wainscoting, mahogany and live oak pediments and banisters, and European sculptures.
