Savannah Bed & Breakfast Inn

117 W. Gordon St., Savannah, Georgia, 31401, United States, Savannah, Georgia, USA

Why We Like It

Relaxed and lacking in pretense, this bed and breakfast boasts some of the friendliest and most helpful staff in town. Although some rooms don’t have the ornate detailing seen at some of the ultra-expensive inns around Savannah, some do reach that level. This residence definitely oozes Southern charm and is in a very central, beautiful location.

Fodor's Expert Review

The rooms at this restored 1853 Federal-style row house on historic Gordon Row near Chatham Square aren't quite as luxe as some of Savannah's finer B&Bs, but they are handsomely appointed and retain many elements of the home's original charm, such as beamed ceilings and exposed-brick walls. The courtyard garden is a lovely cluster of potted tropical flowers surrounding an inviting koi pond. There are four self-contained cottages, and some rooms also have kitchens. Breakfast—which may include sweet-potato pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and eggs to order—can be taken in the parlor or out on the patio, where you may be joined by one of the several courtyard cats. Afternoon tea service is accompanied by fresh baked goods, and milk and homemade chocolate-chip cookies are served every night of the week.

Tip The 2-day parking pass is a great value when you consider the flexibility around town it provides.

Room

One of the nicest aspects of this inn is that there are many different options depending on your party’s size and economic requirements, as the property encapsulates several different buildings. There are four luxury suites, one luxury room, three small cottages (for two people), and two separate houses with three and four bedrooms, respectively. In addition, there are 14 Traditional rooms and 7 value rooms.

You Should Know Amenities vary widely depending on the room, so pay close attention to the descriptions. The value rooms are all up three flights of stairs.

Bathroom

As mentioned previously, the rooms are truly unique from one to the next. Some accommodations have beautiful newly renovated bathrooms. Some of the facilities do not have the most modern hardware or fixtures, nor are they antique or ornate. They are, however, all kept fastidiously clean and are well maintained.

Lobby

The entrance up a classic Savannah exterior staircase soon leads into the main sitting area with a variety of antique chairs to choose from. Moving through to the back of the home, a pleasant wood deck faces the courtyard.

Dining

Several breakfast options are offered, including fruit, yogurt, homemade granola, eggs, grits, bacon, sausage, and bread. Continental menu items such as sweet breakfast breads and an assortment of cereals are also available. At 4 p.m., afternoon refreshments are served, including iced tea, hot tea, coffee and homemade treats. In the evening, milk and cookies are served in the parlor for a sweet bedtime snack.

Restaurants

Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room (4-minute walk) is a must-try if you've never been. This family-style Southern luncheonette has, arguably, the best fried chicken in town. Tip: It's first-come-first-serve, so get in line early because it fills up quickly. If you want to venture out with the locals for dinner, head over to the legendary Crystal Beer Parlor (5-minute walk). Savannah’s oldest restaurant has been going since 1933 and serves a large menu including juicy burgers and creamy crab stew. For fine dining, try Husk Savannah (11-minute walk). After lifting the original Husk in Charleston to international renown, James Beard Award-winning Chef Sean Brock recently unveiled his latest uniquely Savannian iteration. Make sure to book far ahead, as everyone and their grandma is trying to grab seats at these tables.

Bars

Six Pence Pub (8-minute walk) is a traditional English haunt, complete with a proper English phone booth and countless ales on tap. Head over to The Original Pinkie Masters (9-minute walk) for a fun dive bar experience steeped in lore. Real Savannians and a classic rock and roll jukebox.
