Although Savannah has its share of chain hotels and motels, the city's most distinctive lodgings are in more than two dozen historic inns, guesthouses, and B&Bs gracing the Historic District. If the term historic inn brings to mind images of roughing it in shabby-genteel mansions with antiquated plumbing, you'll find that to be the case in a few isolated instances. Such are the woes of older buildings: the creaking staircase, the faucet that comes off in your hand, even the rumors of ghosts.

A continental or full Southern breakfast is often included in the rate, as are afternoon refreshments (usually wine and cheese, sometimes elaborate hors d'oeuvres); these extras definitely help to justify some of the escalated prices. Some B&Bs offer a pass that will give you free on-street parking; others have a few private parking spaces of their own. Nearly all the hotels and inns in the real downtown sector have paid parking, which can range from $8 at the riverfront inns to $18 a night for valet parking.
