Hog Hammock Community

Fodor's Review:

Hog Hammock Community is one the few remaining sites on the south Atlantic coast where ethnic African-American culture from the slave era has been preserved. The "Salt Water Geechee," Georgia's sea island equivalent to the Gullah, are descendants of slaves who worked the island's plantations during the 19th century. Hog Hammock's 40 residents are the last members of a disappearing culture with its own distinct language and customs. The Spirit of Sapelo Tours (Box 7, Sapelo Island, 31327. 912/485-2170) provides private guided bus tours led by an island native who discusses island life, culture, and history. Sapelo Culture Day (912/485-2197. www.sapeloislandgeorgia.org), a celebration of Geechee folklore, music, food, handcrafts, and art takes place in Hog Hammock every year on the third weekend in October. Reservations are required.
