North Georgia's tree-lined mountain roads are a relief from the traffic jams of metro Atlanta. You can spot critters from wild turkeys to deer, and stop off for refreshing visits to waterfalls or savor shopping, lodging, and meals in quaint—and quiet—towns. The area's proximity to metro Atlanta makes it ideal for day trips and overnight stays.

Central Georgia roughly forms a triangle defined by Athens, Macon, and Augusta, which together give you a real flavor of Georgia's elegant past and vibrant future. Madison epitomizes small-town America with its charming antebellum and Victorian architecture. Eatonton, 20 mi down the highway, also has its share of stately historic houses, although your attention will be drawn to the statue of the giant rabbit on the courthouse lawn. It's part of the town's tribute to favorite son Joel Chandler Harris, creator of Br'er Rabbit and Uncle Remus.
