Fodor's Review

While she wrote her masterpiece, the author of Gone With the Wind lived in an apartment house bult in 1899 that she called "the Dump." Volunteers gathered the funds necessary to restore the building in the early 1990s. To many Atlantans, the Margaret Mitchell House symbolizes the conflict between promoting the city's heritage and respecting its roots. The house has been struck by fire twice, in 1994 and 1996. Arson was strongly suspected but no one was ever caught. The visitor center exhibits photographs, archival material, and personal possessions. Purchase tickets at the Atlanta History Center's Midtown campus at 979 Crescent Avenue.
