Fodor's Review:

This museum's permanent collection includes 19th- and 20-century American works, including many by African-American artists. It also displays contemporary art. The building itself is a work of art; the American Institute of Architects listed the sleek structure, designed by Richard Meier, among the 10 best works of American architecture of the 1980s. An expansion designed by Renzo Piano, which opened in 2005, doubled the museum's size to 312,000 square feet with three new aluminum-paneled buildings. The roof features a system of 1,000 "light scoops" that filter light into the skyway galleries. A recent partnership with the Louvre Museum in Paris has brought hundreds of works from the Parisian museum's collection. On the third Friday of every month, the museum is open for Friday Jazz until 10 PM.

  • Cost: $15
  • Open: Tues., Wed., Fri., and Sat. 10-5, Thurs. 10-8, Sun. noon-5

Very good art museum, which has works by a few name artists (Monet, Rodin, Sargent) but has strengths in more unusual niches. Excellent outsider and primitive art collection, with plenty of excellent works by Howard Finster, Nellie Mae Rowe, Ulysses Davis, and others. Also has contemporary art, 19th century US sculpture, English ceramics, and turn of the 20th century canvases by lesser known but talented US painters. It's all housed in a very striking modernist building. Well worth the visit, and located right at the MARTA stop.

I love Richard Meier, but a waste in atlanta. The collection was disappointing.

Most of the other patrons were incredibly crude and ill-mannered.

Then, our car had been broken into when we returned.

This art museum is not a bad find for the US market. It currently has a fabulous exhibit of the French King's artwork on loan from the Louvre. The museum is large, but not overbearing and can be viewed in a few hours. The only complaints I have is that parking is hard to find and expensive and the admission price is kind of steep ($12).
