Closed to traffic, Piedmont Park (Piedmont Ave. between 10th St. and Monroe Ave., Midtown. www.piedmontpark.org) is popular for biking, running, dog-walking, and other recreational activities. Skate Escape (1086 Piedmont Ave., across from Piedmont Park, Midtown. 404/892-1292) rents and sells bikes and in-line skates.

Connecting Atlanta with the Alabama state line, the Silver Comet Trail (404/875-7284. www.pathfoundation.org) is very popular with bikers. The trail is asphalt and concrete.

Part of the Atlanta-DeKalb trail system, the Stone Mountain/Atlanta Greenway Trail (404/875-7284. www.pathfoundation.org) is a mostly off-road paved path that follows Ponce de Leon Avenue east of the city into Stone Mountain Park. The best place to start the 17-mi trek is the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library & Museum.
