If tennis is your game, this is the place to stay—it's one of Florida's best racquet clubs, and tennis greats such as Björn Borg have made it their home court. Ten of its courts are clay hydrosurfaced (the other 11 are hard), and the pros are all USPTA-certified. It runs clinics and camps at all levels, and with the guaranteed match-making program, you can play with a pro when no one else is available. There are even rackets and lessons for children, plus excellent free kids' programs. The Colony dining room has a reputation for good food and wine. Suites sleep up to eight. Among the suites are a two-story penthouse and three private beach houses that open onto sand and sea. The exterior and interior of the lodging buildings are truly outdated; the bed linens could have come from Motel 6. Pros: a must for tennis fans; not far from trendy St. Armands shopping. Cons: pricey; not for those who don't love tennis; rooms lack polish of pricey resorts.

we loved our recent visit...no pretenses here...just casual and comfortable. food was reaaly great...definitely not your typical hotel fare...nice onsite shops, too. we're not tennis players but it was fun to watch the way the pros work with kids...the kids program was all-around great. we had some not so great weather and they had planned activities to help us forget we couldn't get to the beach which, by the way is amazing! we're definitely going back and are even planning a family reunion there now...
