The Museum of Fine Arts, one of the city's cornerstones, is a gorgeous Mediterranean-revival structure that houses outstanding collections of European, American, pre-Columbian, and Asian art. Major works here by American artists range from Whistler to O'Keeffe to Rauschenberg and Lichtenstein, but the museum is known for its collection of French artists, including Fragonard, Cézanne, Monet, Rodin, Gauguin, and Renoir. There are also photography exhibits that draw from a permanent collection of more than 1,200 works. In 2008 the Hazel Hough Wing opened, more than doubling the museum's exhibit space. A new café offers visitors a lunch respite and a beautiful view of the bay. Docents give narrated gallery tours.

The permanent collection is modest sized and has a few nuggets of interest, but is not a must-see. It's more worthwhile if they have a good temporary exhibit. A bit pricey for what you get.
