Founded and named by two Scots in the 1880s, this town hosts the Highland Games in March and the Celtic Festival in November, both of which pay tribute to the town's heritage. Dunedin also has a nicely restored historic downtown—only about five blocks long—that has become a one-stop shopping area for antiques hunters and is also lined with gift shops and good nonchain eateries.
