FlowRider at Surf Style. Surf Style, in the towering new Hyatt, is a chain store that sells beach essentials like sarongs, sunblock, and souvenirs. But what sets this particularly enormous store apart is a new FlowRider, an outdoor pool that generates artificial waves suitable for surfing; for $20 a half hour, you and the kids can surf or learn to surf, something you can't usually do out in the gulf. An instructor is on hand to show you the ropes. SurfStyle, 315 S. Gulfview Blvd., Clearwater, FL, 33767. 727/446-6566. www.surf-style.com.

Pinellas Trail. This 35-mile paved route spans Pinellas County from Clearwater all the way to Tarpon Springs. Along a former railway line, the trail runs adjacent to major thoroughfares, no more than 10 feet from the roadway, so you can access it from almost any point. The trail, also popular with in-line skaters, has spawned trailside businesses such as repair shops and health-food cafés. There are also many lovely rural areas to bike through and plenty of places to rent bikes. Be wary of traffic in downtown Clearwater and on the congested areas of the Pinellas Trail, which still needs more bridges for crossing over busy streets, and avoid the trail at night. To start riding from the route's south end, park at Trailhead Park (37th Street South at 8th Avenue South) in St. Petersburg. To ride south from the north end, park your car in downtown Tarpon Springs (East Tarpon Avenue at North Stafford Avenue). Clearwater, FL. 727/549-6099. www.pinellascounty.org/trailgd.
