Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center

Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center Review

The River District has become a haven for independent galleries, and in late 2009 a nonprofit stepped in to turn a run-down W.P.A. post office from 1933 into a space for edgy, up-and-coming visual artists, musical acts, films, and theater. Even if your taste runs more to Broadway and Monet than M-Pact and Marcus Jansen, a visit is worth it alone for the neoclassical revival façade: eight towering coral-rock ionic columns give way to swaths of intricately detailed window screens. The friendly staff is happy to give guided tours, as long as they are not prepping for a show. Renovations are still in progress; for now, the gallery doubles as the stage. Plan a trip around the city's monthly first-Friday Art Walks; the center stays open late for the throngs of passersby.
