This relic from the 1950s was rescued and dressed up into a suave, design-forward, all-suites property in 2000. Subsequent renovations under new ownership in 2002 and 2004 have added outdoor showers and Jacuzzis to some of the suites. Lush landscaping, a pool surrounded by a sandy "beach," and lounge chairs at the water's edge are just the start. Complimentary yoga classes, a Zen garden, and a rock waterfall lend a spalike vibe. Cool tile-and-terrazzo floors invite you to kick off your shoes and step out onto your private patio overlooking the gardens and the bay. Breakfast and lunch are served on the waterside terrace. Pros: cool design; plenty of places to relax; complimentary use of bikes and kayaks. Cons: trailer park across the street; not much of a beach.

Upon arrival, we were shown to our "upgraded" room. So disappointed in just about everything: cheap tile floors and furniture; tiny bathroom badly in need of updating with only one sink and little room for toiletries; dirty curtains, badly painted walls, small, old tv in bedroom, uncomfortable "couch" in living room.
The bed was quite comfortable, but comforter cover was placed over a blood stained comforter. Towels were plentiful and of high quality. Outdoor chairs on balcony covered with nice terry cloth. Balcony jacuzzi a wonderful respite from the Florida heat.
Air conditioner filty and thankfully hidden by louvered doors. These units are old and very loud--ones in the rooms below and beside us were heard throughout the nights. Very limited closet space. Dumpsters emptied with great force and noise @ 5 am.
Guess the high price of these rooms can be offset by the exquisite surroundings.
The hammocks were clean; new towels were set out each day on each lounge chair. Every place to sit or lounge was comfortable and noise free (except for one boat owner who sat in his boat for 2 hours and programmed his GPS while clumsily hitting the boat horn and dropping metal items--chains?) Service everywhere was outstanding. The continental breakfast is served in a beautiful setting and the food is top quality.
If the owners dwelt as much on the inside as they did with the outside amenities, then this place would rate 5 stars.
Can't compare with other properties, as this is the first visit to the Florida Keys.
