Big Cypress National Preserve

Big Cypress National Preserve

On the northern edge of Everglades National Park is Big Cypress National Preserve, one of the least-developed watershed areas in South Florida. Established by Congress in 1974 to protect the Everglades, it comprises extensive tracts of prairie, marsh, pinelands, forested swamps, and sloughs. Hunting and off-road-vehicle use are allowed. Come here if you like alligators. Stop at the Oasis Visitor Center to walk the boardwalk over alligators and then drive Loop Road for a backwoods experience. If time permits, kayak the Turner River. Many activities in the parks and preserve are based on water, so be prepared to get a bit damp on the marshy trails.
