Outstanding examples of European, American, pre-Columbian, and Asian art are at the Museum of Fine Arts, a gorgeous Mediterranean Revival structure on the waterfront one block from the Pier. You'll find major works by American artists ranging from Whistler to O'Keeffe to Rauschenberg and Lichtenstein, but the museum is known for its collection of French artists, including Fragonard, Cézanne, Monet, Rodin, Gauguin, and Renoir. There are also photography exhibits that draw from a permanent collection of more than 1,200 works. Docents give narrated gallery tours. Admission prices and museum hours are sometimes increased for special exhibits.

The permanent collection is modest sized and has a few nuggets of interest, but is not a must-see. It's more worthwhile if they have a good temporary exhibit. A bit pricey for what you get.
