Fodor's Review

Like a hermit crab sliding into a new shell, Conchy Joe's moved up from West Palm Beach in 1983 to its current home, a 1920s rustic stilt house on the Indian River. It's full of antique fish mounts, gator hides, and snakeskins and is a popular tourist spot—but the waterfront location, casual vibe, and delicious seafood lures locals, too. Grouper marsala (the house specialty), coconut shrimp, and fried Bahamian cracked conch are menu fixtures, and live reggae gets people

out of their shells Thursday through Sunday.

Conchy Joe's Review

Stay away unless you enjoy food poisoning! I contracted Food Poisoning from eating the conch salad at this establishment on Sat May 5th, 2012 @ 5:30pm. Then the restaurant was inspected by the local health dept a week later and cited violations for several RISK & CRITICAL factors including product temperature; cross-contamination; product date labeling and foodservice sanitation/cleanliness! My symptoms began Monday morning (05/07/2012)

around 9am; they worsened significantly at around 11am when I began to vomit repeatedly, at least (5) times, and then the diarrhea commenced about every 1/2 hr from that moment on for the next 24-48 hrs. I pinpoint the conch salad as it was the only unique item I ate which no one else at my table ate; we were a party of (5). It is also the only uncooked item eaten from that point until the symptoms began. I recall when eating the conch salad; it had an off-taste, bit metallic but continued to eat it anyway since I was very hungry. I did not finish it, rather took the leftovers back to my hotel and never ate it again. I have eaten conch salad on many occasions and enjoy it; but for some reason, this did not taste well and was unable to finish it; I should have known after that first bite to stop. I often eat raw oysters, ceviches and sushi without abandon and have never in my (40) years become ill; until now. I will never again eat uncooked seafood after this experience; as I have become scared and wish to never experience this again. I am concerned the restaurant failed to properly handle the conch salad; it was either old or held too long, temperature abused or prepared in an unsanitary manner.

This Beach Bum's Favorite

My favorite casual restaurant on the Treasure Coast. Excellent food, casual tropical atmosphere, cold beer and terrific music.
