Orlando Sports & Activities

Tennis, anyone? Or maybe you'd rather surf, parasail, or ride a horse. Should you feel the need to stretch your legs and travel outside the theme parks, you can take part in these activities and many more around Orlando.

But if your vacation is based solely at Disney, you’ll have plenty of recreational opportunities to choose from. Disney is known for its championship golf courses, of course, and several lighted courts—both clay and hard—are found at five Disney resorts. Disney's Fort Wilderness is the place to saddle up for a ride through the woods, and the Contemporary Resort is number one for water sports, including parasailing.

Anglers get hooked on fishing charters; runners and bikers get their adrenaline rush on trails across the property. If you'd rather be a spectator, take yourself out to a ball game at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Popcorn? Check. Hot dogs? Check. Does it get any better than this? For Disney recreation information, call 407/939–7529.

There are many ways to enjoy the outdoors here. You can navigate the more than 2,000 lakes and waterways, perhaps on a sportfishing excursion—something to consider in what is one of the bass-fishing capitals of the world. You can also take to the air in a glider or hot-air balloon, or stay firmly planted hiking or biking a trail.

According to the folks at the Orlando Convention and Visitors Bureau, there are more than 170 golf courses and 20 golf academies in the area. Indeed you'll probably be amazed by the country club–like golf courses (and tennis courts) run by the City of Orlando and accessible at bargain prices.

Orlando’s sports arena and its three pro teams (basketball, hockey, and arena football) bring in the crowds. Throughout Central Florida, professional baseball comes down from the frozen North to warm up during spring training.
