Haunted Mansion

Fodor's Review:

The special effects here are a howl. Or perhaps a scream is more like it. Or for most, both. You're greeted at the creaking iron gates of this Hudson River Valley Gothic mansion by a lugubrious attendant, who has one of the few jobs at Disney for which smiling is frowned upon, and ushered into a spooky picture gallery. A disembodied voice echoes from the walls: "Welcome, foolish mortals, to the Haunted Mansion. I am your ghost host." A scream shivers down, and you're off into one of Disney's classic attractions.

Consisting mainly of a slow-moving ride in a black, cocoonlike "doom buggy," the Haunted Mansion is only scary for younger children, and that's mostly because of the darkness. Everyone else will just laugh at the special effects. Watch the artfully strung liquid cobwebs pass you by; the suit of armor that comes alive; the shifting walls in the portrait gallery that make you wonder if they are moving up or if you are moving down; the ghostly ballroom dancers; and, of course, Madame Leota's talking disembodied head in the crystal ball. Just when you think the Imagineers have exhausted their bag of ectoplasmic tricks, along comes another one; you suddenly discover that your doom buggy has gained an extra passenger. As you approach the exit, your ghoulish guide intones, "Now I will raise the safety bar, and the ghost will follow you home." Thanks for the souvenir, pal. And speaking of souvenirs, if you can't resist bringing home more than a friendly ghost, you can get Disney's Clue Haunted Mansion board game at a souvenir cart outside the attraction, at the park's Emporium gift shop, or at Once Upon a Toy in Downtown Disney.
