In this loftlike downtown building, the former headquarters of the Western Union Telegraph Company, a permanent collection of 20th-century art shares space with traveling exhibitions. The museum encompasses five galleries and ArtExplorium, a highly interactive educational exhibit for kids, as well as a funky gift shop and Café Nola, open for lunch on weekdays and for dinner on Thursday and Friday. MOCA Jacksonville (previously known as the Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art) also hosts film series, lectures, and workshops throughout the year. Big-city visitors often remark that they're impressed with the facility and exhibitions, but with MOCA Jacksonville comprising just 14,000 square feet (compared with the 630,000 at New York's Museum of Modern Art), they wonder where the rest is. Sunday is free for kids and their accompanying adults.
