Located on the campus of the University of Florida, the state's official museum of natural history and the largest natural-history museum in the Southeast has holdings of more than 20 million objects and specimens. In addition to active collections in anthropology, archaeology, botany, mammalogy, and ornithology, the museum features several interesting replicas, including a Maya palace, a typical Timucuan household, and a full-size model of a Florida cave and mangrove forest. The museum's newest permanent exhibit, the Butterfly Rainforest, houses 55 to 65 species of butterflies in a 6,400-square-foot, screened, free-flight vivarium. Butterfly releases take place Saturday and Sunday at 2, 3, and 4.
