Ocala National Forest

Ocala National Forest Review

This breathtaking 383,000-acre national forest off State Road 40 has lakes, springs, rivers, hiking trails, campgrounds, and historic sites. It also has the largest off-highway vehicle trail system in the Southeast and three major recreational areas: Alexander Springs, Salt Springs, and Juniper Springs. About 30 campsites are sprinkled throughout the park and range from bare sites to sites with electric hook-ups, showers, and bathrooms (credit cards are not accepted at them). To get here, take Interstate 4 east to Exit 92, and head west on Route 436 to U.S. 441, which you take north to Route 19 north.

Alexander Springs. In this recreation area you'll find a stream and a campground. Off Rte. 40 via Rte. 445 S, 32134. $4.

Salt Springs. The draw here is a natural saltwater spring where Atlantic blue crabs come to spawn each summer. The area received a sidewalk and landscaping update in the latter half of 2009. Visitor center, 14100 State Rd. 19, 32134. $4.

Juniper Springs. Here you'll find a stone waterwheel house, a campground, a natural-spring swimming pool, and hiking trails. The 7-mi Juniper Springs run is a narrow, twisting, and winding canoe ride, which, although exhilarating, isn't for the novice. 14100 Rte. 40 N, 32134. $4.
