Quiet and intimate, this family-operated restaurant and race-car-driver hangout has long upheld its reputation as the best place for steaks in the area (since 1948, to be exact) despite its nondescript exterior and somewhat out-of-the-way location west of town. Gene's has a decidedly old-school, supper-club vibe, with classics like escargot baked in puff pastry, French onion soup, and Gene's special-recipe Roquefort dressing. Signature entrées include cooked-to-order filet mignons, sirloins, and porterhouses. Seafood is also on the menu, and the wine list is one of the state's largest, with bottles ranging from $19 to $1,200.

Very good steak, but the decor is datede and a bit downmarket.
