One of Miami's most valued cultural institutions, the New World is known as "America's training orchestra" because its musicians are recent graduates of the best music schools nationwide. They perform a largely modern repertory here for three years before going on to more established orchestras around the country. Under the direction of conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, the New World has become a widely acclaimed, artistically dazzling group that has toured extensively since its founding in 1988. From October through May, performances take place at the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts and at the landmark art deco Lincoln Theatre. Once a major movie palace, the theater was renovated in 1989 to become Miami Beach's loveliest and most acoustically superb auditorium. The symphony's concerts are broadcast live via speaker (and sometimes video) over the Lincoln Road Mall. Who would have thought you could rollerblade outdoors to live classical music? It's a beautiful way to spend a Saturday evening or Sunday afternoon.
