If you're looking for a clean place in the emerging SoFi (South of 5th) area to rest your head for the evening, this very basic and cheap (but tidy) hotel gives you a chance to discover a more residential side of bustling South Beach while staying in a 1939 two-story art deco masterpiece by Henry Hohauser. The Century is nothing special, but it's well-maintained. With rates around $120 including breakfast, rooms cater to the budget-conscious traveler and offer a great
base for exploring South Beach. Think of it as an upscale hostel. There's no booking engine on Century's website; you must call to book a room.

I stayed in the Century Hotel while on business in Miami, so the location was not necessarily a factor for me. I found the service to be quite friendly, and the dog in the lobby game it a homey feel. The room however was a bit disappointing - the ceiling light was burnt out and the cable guide which listed nearly 90 channels gave me false hope (I think I really had about 10). Also, I found it a bit strange that I had an ironing board in my room,
but I had to go to the front desk to pick up an iron. I guess that could just be the laid back nature of the beach though - no need to iron that bikini! The alarm was built into the TV - but I would have preferred an actual alarm clock. Overall, it was adequate, but nothing to brag about.

We spent one night at the Century, after reading a Fodor's online review -- this place is far from trendy, comfortable or clean. Although the location is ideal -"south of 5th",across from the beach and Starbucks - it was awful. My husband and I - veteran travelers -found our room dirty, with an air conditioner that sounded like an idling tractor- trailer truck. Then, to top it off a less than simpathetic morning desk clerk. Skip this one and check
out the Mercury around the corner!

The Century is hip, stylish and comfortable. The location on the quieter part of Ocean Dr. is ideal. What sets this hotel apart is the service--the staff here is friendly and very helpful. Minor downsides: Wish the hotel offered room service from Joia, the attached Italian restaurant; request a room away from the restaurant, where it's quieter.
