For some really gritty local flavor and color, seek out Jimbo's, a hard-to-find but impossible-to-miss hangout. To get here, turn on Arthur Lamb Jr. Road just south of the MAST (Maritime and Science Technology) Academy. Tell the toll-booth attendant you're headed to Jimbo's, and you'll save the $5 vehicle charge assessed to beachgoers. Follow the road past the sewer plant until you see the makeshift sign and cluster of ramshackle buildings to the right. Have a cold beer and wander around the joint. Domestic wildlife -- roosters, chickens, and dogs -- shares space with herons and pelicans, and you might spot a manatee in the lagoon. The atmospheric shacks, sometimes occupied by rowdy live bands, have been used for countless TV, movie, video, and still-photo shoots. The lagoon in back was a location for the television series Flipper. Relax, watch the crusty characters playing bocce, and you'll feel delightfully removed from civilization.
