These eight homes, intended to resemble a traditional Chinese residential compound, are easily the most exotic of Merrick's creations, since his Persian and Tangiers villages never got past the drawing board. Their designer, Henry Killam Murphy, was an expert in Chinese architecture; he also designed several universities in China. Among the borrowed architectural elements that set these homes apart are the latticework on balconies, the blue-tile eaves and roofs, and the window grills. Notice the bamboolike ornamentation on the concrete-and-stucco wall that defines the block.
