Jai Alai in Miami

Jai Alai

Don't know what it is? Visit the Miami Jai Alai Fronton to learn about this game invented in the Basque region of northern Spain. Jai alai is perhaps the world's fastest game: jai alai balls, called pelotas, have been clocked at speeds exceeding 170 mph. The game is played in a 176-foot-long court, and players literally climb the walls to catch the ball in a cesta (a woven basket), which has an attached glove. You can place your wager on the team you think will win or on the order in which you think the teams will finish. The Miami Fronton, built in 1926, is America's oldest. Sessions comprise 13 to 14 games -- some singles, some doubles. 3500 N.W. 37th Ave., 1 mi east of the airport, north of Downtown. 305/633-6400. $1, reserved seats $2, Courtview Club $5. Mon. and Wed.-Sun. noon-5:30, plus Wed. and Fri.-Sat. 7-midnight.
