Miami Beach's ocean vistas, wide sidewalks, and flat terrain make it a perfect locale for in-line skating—and don't the locals know it. Very popular is the Lincoln Road Mall from Washington Avenue to Alton Road; many of the restaurants along this pedestrian mall have outdoor seating where you can eat without shedding your skates. For a great view of the Art Deco district and action on South Beach, skate along the sidewalk on the east side of Ocean Drive from 5th to 14th streets. In South Miami an often-traversed concrete path winds under the elevated Metrorail from Vizcaya Station (across U.S. 1 from the Miami Museum of Science) to Red Road at U.S. 1 (across from the Shops at Sunset Place). You don't have to bring your own; a number of in-line skate shops offer rentals that include protective gear.
Fritz's Bike, Skate and Surf (730 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach, 33139. 305/532-1954) charges $10 an hour or $24 for 24 hours, which includes a helmet. A deposit of $150 is required.
