This massive 330-acre resort closed for about a year and a half after extensive hurricane damage in August 2004. It partially reopened in March 2006 under new ownership with all-new, upgraded guest accommodations, 19 swimming pools, reinvented private restaurants and shops, and a remodeled 9-hole golf course with lush water features. The resort is now operating full swing and at its best ever. As in the past, stylish, low-rise hotel rooms, villas, and houses are all over the property but are concentrated at either end, near the marina and, to the south, near the entry gate and the small shopping complex. Dunes fringe a pristine 2 1/2-mi beach, and mangroves edge the single main road. Entry gates and water on three sides give the resort a delicious seclusion, but trolleys take you around property and into Captiva village. A new Golden Door Spa is expected to open in 2008. Pros: full-service amenities, security, isolation, exclusivity, car-free transportation. Cons: high rates, isolation (a pro for some, con for others), spread out.

We are on this resort for 6 days. Generally it is very nice and very rejuvenating. We have a Land's End 2 BDR villa. The unit is spacious and nicely furnished, very comfortable. However, aggressive beach ants have made the kitchen (which is beautiful!) unusable. All our food is stored in the frig for self defense! If you leave a crumb or drop on the granite counter, they are on it in seconds! I wasn't planning to cook much anyway but this makes it uncomfortable.
One other negative to be aware of: when you book, you are NOT guaranteed a specific location. We came from quite a distance and had never been here before. I specifically requested a water view accommodation and confirmed several times in advance. We are assigned to a golf course view near the pool and were told upon arrival that they do not guarantee specific units! We're positive folks, so we've dealt with it but it's the first time I've been to the beach anywhere where I thought we were paying for water front or water view and didn't get it! We do like this place for the nature and the peace. Watersports are great here.
You do need to drive to restaurants. We won't choose it again though because of the accommodations assignment.
