Likened to a Bavarian mirage plucked from the Alps and plopped along State Road 84 near airport and seaport, the Old Heidelberg's beer stein-cowbell-cuckoo clock decor accents the veal loaf, sauerkraut, and other specialties, from apple strudel to Black Forest cake. Owners Heidi Bruggermann and Dieter Doerrenberg hit South Florida to thaw out in 1984. After opening a wholesale sausage factory, they bought a onetime seafood eatery in 1991 for transformation into a German-style haven for breaded pork cutlets, fried burgers, panfried flounder, and stuffed roast pork with bread dumplings. For better or wurst in takeout, the Old Heidelberg Deli next door (open Tuesday through Saturday 9-6) stocks kielbasa, liver dumplings, Bitburger beer, breads, and nearly a dozen mustards.
