This 39-story property has a central atrium with ceilings soaring to 60 feet. A signature of the resort is its 120-foot bridged infinity pool, extending from lobby to oceanfront. A Mediterranean-inspired spa offers more than a dozen pampering treatments, including a caviar facial. The hotel's country club, across the Intracoastal Waterway, has golf and tennis facilities. Shuttle service takes you across in no time. Pros: loads of pizzazz; eye-popping architecture. Cons: beach often seems eroded.

The Diplomat is a luxury hotel with an attached convention center. It's big. But the pools, including an infinity pool, are great, although the pool scene can be chaotic and crowded. The hotel opens up to the beach, where we spent most of our time. The hotel restaurants are pricey, but especially good. We liked Aizia which specialized in Asian fusion. Nikki Marina had excellent seafood, but the place reeked of hip attitude. One piece of advice: When booking your reservation, find out if there is a convention going on. We were there at the same time as the Hooters Swimsuit competition, which drew decidely mixed reaction.
