Fodor's Review

New-wave epicurean dining had its South Florida start here circa 1984, but Darrel and

Oliver's Cafe Maxx remains fresh. The menu changes nightly showcasing tropical appeal with dishes that may include jerk-spiced sea scallops, jumbo stone crab claws with honey-lime mustard sauce, or black-bean-and-banana-pepper chili with Florida avocado. Appetizers often include caviar pie and crispy sweetbreads. Desserts such as banana spring rolls and the vanilla bean crème brûlée stay the tropical course with their secondary ingredients. Select from some 300 wines by the bottle, and many by the glass.

...what you pay for.

Have been to Cafe Max several times over the past years,,, the food has always been very good. And yes, it is pricey... as an example, there is a $55 roast veal chop on the menu... many wouldn't risk ordering it for that price, but I can tell you, you'd be hard pressed to find a better, more well prepared entree anywhere! Sometimes you get what you pay for.

If not for the special price - It's not worth it.

As part of Dine Out Lauderdale we went to Café Maxx for their related $35 price fixed menu. The food was fine except for the cold tomatoes on the Caprese salad, over cooked vegetables that came with the Petite Filet Mignon and the Crème Brulee that was mostly cream. However, the service was not friendly and felt rushed. Given their normal prices we dont think the value is there for a return visit.
