Palafox Historic District

Historic Districts / Sites, Pensacola

Fodor's Review:

Palafox Street is the main stem of historic downtown Pensacola and the center of the Palafox Historic District. The commercial and government hub of Old Pensacola is now an active cultural and retail district. Note the opulent Spanish Renaissance-style Saenger Theater, Pensacola's 1925 movie palace, which now hosts performances by the local symphony and opera, and the Bear Block, a former wholesale grocery with wrought-iron balconies that are a legacy from Pensacola's Creole past. On Palafox between Government and Zaragoza streets is a statue of Andrew Jackson that commemorates the formal transfer of Florida from Spain to the United States in 1821. While in the area, stop by Veterans Memorial Park, just off Bayfront Parkway near 9th Avenue. The ¾-scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., honors the more than 58,000 Americans who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.
