San Luis Archaeological and Historic Site

Museums / Galleries, Tallahassee

Fodor's Review:

This museum focuses on the archaeology of 17th-century Spanish mission and Apalachee Indian town sites. In its heyday, in 1675, the Apalachee village here had a population of at least 1,400, and it was near here that explorer Hernando de Soto celebrated the New World's first Christmas. Threatened by Creek Indians and British forces in 1704, the locals burned the village and fled. Take self-guided tours and watch scientists conducting digs daily (usually). The museum's popular Living History program is held on the third Saturday of the month, 10 AM-2 PM.
