Ted Smallwood pioneered this last American frontier in 1906 and built a 3,000-square-foot pine trading post raised on pilings on Chokoloskee Bay. Smallwood's granddaughter Lynn McMillin reopened it in 1989, after it had been closed for several years, and installed a small gift shop and a museum chock-full of goods from the store, including historic photographs and original store ledgers; Native American clothing, furs, and hides; and area memorabilia. An annual festival in March celebrates the century-long relationship the store has had with local Native Americans.
