Planning Your Time

It takes about four or five hours to tour the monuments west of the Mall, with time to relax on a park bench and grab a snack from a vendor or one of the snack bars east of the Washington Monument, near the Lincoln Memorial.

If you're visiting during the first two weeks in April, take extra time around the Tidal Basin and the Washington Monument to marvel at the cherry blossoms. From mid-April through November, you might want to spend an hour on a paddleboat in the Tidal Basin. In summer, consider taking a Martz Gray Line bus and travel between the monuments in air-conditioned comfort.

Across the Potomac, Arlington National Cemetery merits a couple of hours on its own.
