Washington, D.C. Restaurants

Zengo

Zengo Review

Asian-Latin fusion may not sound like a winning idea, but it turns out surprisingly well at this lively bilevel restaurant, part of New York-based chef Richard Sandoval's growing empire. A sceney bar, where $5 happy hour specials draw large crowds, and a large airy upstairs dining room get a lift from eye-catching art: fired-clay "baked potatoes" hanging from the ceiling and scattered along one orange wall, for example. Food juxtapositions are just as audacious, with crunchy, spicy, sweet, and salty flavors shown to advantage in dishes like arepas de puerco, a pork dish with hoisin, and the Thai shrimp lettuce wrap.
