Fodor's Review:

In a part of the city better known for auto-supply shops, Marrakesh supplies a taste of Morocco in a fixed-price ($30 per person, not including drinks) feast shared by everyone at your table. Appetizers consist of a platter of three salads followed by b'stella, a traditional chicken pie made with crisp layers of phyllo dough and seasoned with cinnamon. The first main course is chicken with lemon and olive. A beef or lamb dish is next, followed by vegetable couscous, fruit, mint tea, and pastries. Belly dancers perform nightly. Lunch is available for groups of 10 or more only, by reservation.

MEMORABLE

We spent a good part of last February in the city of Marrakesh in Morocco where we stayed at the Hibernage hotel -- a great location that put us closer to all of the interesting things in that charming city. When I accompanied my daughter to Washington, D.C., to help her with the nightmare of moving into an apartment adjacent to George Washington University where she is preparing for her master's degree in economics, we decided to renew our North African experience and go to the Marrakesh restaurant on New York Avenue. It proved to be a good choice to leave behind the dreadful nuisance of moving into college. We found the restaurant extremely relaxing, but then experienced the excitement of a talented belly dancing performance which debuted under a salvo of cell phones and digital cam flash bulbs. We were very happy and were fed a seven course dinner using our fingers (but we had already been accustomed to that method of eating when in Morocco). Our evening was very pleasant overall, and my daughter with her chipotle standard of palate asked the waiter to give her a bit of Harissa and added that flaming zing to her already well seasoned couscous. The dinner finished with cool fresh fruits and sweetened hot mint tea. We were impressed when we were offered after dinner drinks only just because we complained that we had to wait 10 minutes for our table. The most difficult time for me was to get up and leave. I would have lingered on my relaxing divan if I had not had to catch an early morning flight the next day.
