The surroundings are neither luxurious nor terribly atmospheric, but no Washington hotel gets you quicker access to the State Department, which sits across the street, and the spacious suites have kitchenettes and lighted dressing tables. The staff is friendly and attentive, guests receive a complimentary newspaper and a shoe shine, and nightly turndown service is provided. The cozy outdoor terrace is a nice place to enjoy a meal or drink during the non-winter months.
Ask for a room away from the floors undergoing renovation.

The best thing about the State Plaza was the price, although I had to put up with a few annoyances in return. They didn't significantly spoil my experience, but if I return to DC I think I would try another hotel first. I'm surprised to see Fodor's list the rate as over $200 a night. I stayed at the State Plaza at the end of June 2007 and my room cost only $99 a night + tax. Maybe I was lucky. (I reserved my room through the Internet, fyi.) I booked
the room just three days before I wanted to check in, so I guess I was also lucky that this hotel had a room available on such short notice, because some other hotels I looked at didn't have any vacancies for the nights I wanted. The State Plaza is not in a convenient location. It's at least a 10-minute walk from the closest Metro stop (Foggy Bottom) and it's far away from most of DC's attractions--I think it took me 20 minutes to walk to the Mall from the hotel. My room was okay; it was clean, and it had a kitchenette. The view was nothing special. I wanted to make a phone call from my room but the phone wasn't working. The front desk said that the phone system was down, so I had to use a pay phone instead. The elevators are really slow. Accessibility could be a pain: there are stairs separating the front desk and the hallway to the elevator, so people in wheelchairs have to wheel themselves outside and go around the building into the garage in order to enter the rest of the hotel. (Watch out for the automatic doors leading from the garage into the first-floor hallway. I got hit by one of them once.) The staff is cordial enough but the person checking me in didn't read the comments section of my reservation. I had asked for two beds; he assigned me a room with one bed. That problem was easily fixed, but it makes me wonder: if the staff isn't going to read the comments, why have a comments section on the reservation form? Overall a decent but not outstanding hotel.
