Inscribed in Greek under the cornice is a quotation from Aristotle on the value of science—appropriate for a building that houses the offices of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council. There are often free art exhibits here—not all of them relating to science—and, from September to May, free Sunday afternoon concerts. In front of the academy is Robert Berks's sculpture of Albert Einstein, done in the same mashed-potato style as the artist's bust of JFK in the Kennedy Center.
