American Red Cross

Fodor's Review:

The national headquarters for the American Red Cross is composed of three buildings. Guided tours of the oldest, a neoclassical structure of blinding-white marble built in 1917 to commemorate the women who cared for the wounded on both sides during the Civil War, is known for its three stained-glass windows designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Other highlights of the 45-minute tour include an original Norman Rockwell painting, sculptures, and two signature quilts. One quilt was signed in 1918 by celebrities including Charlie Chaplin, Helen Keller, and Theodore Roosevelt; the other was signed in 1998 by all the living U.S. presidents and their wives. Weather permitting, the tour includes a visit to the courtyard.
