The French could not have landed a better location for the Sofitel, a minute's walk from the White House. The boutique hotel has maintained the 1920s style of the original Shoreham Building, with an understated, sophisticated lobby and chic, though slightly small, guest rooms with beautiful marble bathrooms. The multilingual staff caters to Europeans and Americans. Cafe 15 serves artful French dishes under the direction of an award-winning chef.

My husband and I just returned from a four night stay at the Sofitel in DC. We were delighted and disappointed equally. The location was wonderful - blocks from the White House, as well as the Metro, although there are many hotels with premium locations. We also loved the "boutique" hotel feel and the friendly staff. We were very disappointed with the service, as they seemed to be understaffed in more than one area. When we arrived, there was no one to take our luggage, not only from our taxi to the front desk, but from the front desk to our room. We ate in the lounge downstairs on several occasions and at different times of the day. The food was consistent and wonderful. At lunch, they had 1 person for the entire lounge. We waited for quite some time to have our drink order taken and even longer for the drinks to arrive. This happened twice and with 2 different wait staff. Evenings were better - More wait staff and better service. Housekeeping also seemed under staffed. They didn't arrive at our room until well after 2 in the afternoon. By then, we'd returned from shopping or our business meetings and asked them to come back later. One day our room was never cleaned. With all of the wonderful choices in DC, we will not be returning to this hotel.

We had the opportunity to spend several nights there in Sept '07. It was a delightful experience. Very clean and stylish. We're not used to DC prices, but it was worth it to us to enjoy such a wonderful hotel
