Anacostia Museum and Center for African American History and Culture

Fodor's Review:

The richness of African-American culture is on display in this Smithsonian museum and research facility in southeast Washington's Anacostia neighborhood. The museum's facade uses traditional African design elements: brickwork patterns evoke West African kente cloth, and the concrete cylinders reference the stone towers of Zimbabwe and are ornamented with diamond patterns like those found on the adobe houses of Mali. Special exhibitions showcase fine art—photography, painting, sculpture—as well as crafts, social history, and popular culture.

  • Cost: Free
