Behind a weathered stone wall in the Old Lyme historic district is a three-story 1756 Colonial house with 5.5 acres of broad lawns, formal gardens, and herbaceous borders. The scale of rooms throughout is small and inviting, with fireplaces in the parlors and dining rooms and light and airy curtains in the multipaned guest-room windows. Most rooms have canopy or four-poster beds. Fireplaces and candlelight exude romance in the restaurant ($$$-$$$$; closed Monday and Tuesday), where innovative American cuisine—with entrées such as herb-grilled filet mignon with lobster-mashed potatoes—is served with style. Pros: a short walk from Griswold Museum, lovely old home, fantastic restaurant. Cons: can hear noise from I-95, historic rooms don't have many modern amenities.
