Rooms at the cushy Saybrook are furnished mainly in 18th-century style, with reproductions of British furniture and impressionist art—many have fireplaces. The pools overlook the inn's marina and the Connecticut River, and a full-service spa offers Swedish-style aromatherapy, sea-clay facial masques, and a nice range of salon treatments. The Terra Mar Grille, which sits on the river, serves stylish Continental cuisine. Pros: swanky rooms, top-notch service, superb restaurant. Cons: pricey, a car is needed to get to downtown shops and dining.
