Fodor's Review:

A black wrought-iron gate beckons you away from the boutiques of Chester's Main Street, and an off-white awning draws you through the door of this classic little Colonial storefront, painted in historic Newport blue and blooming with flower boxes. Here you can sample exquisite French country cuisine—escargots broiled in garlic and parsley sauce in the traditional Alsatian manner, crispy roast duckling with olives, raisins, and sundried tomatoes in port wine sauce—while recapping the day's shopping coups.

What a disappointment last Saturday's dinner was. This place has lost the ambiance of former years. Tables are jammed in, the waiter dripped wine all over the bread plates and tablecloth and the food was not fresh. My friends and I had the soft shell crabs and they were strangely mushy and off tasting as well as burned. When I mentioned this to my fishmonger he said that there were no soft shell crabs available last weekend from Boston to NY except for a tank of dead crabs which were being cleaned and sold. He concluded that we were either sold previously frozen or dead crabs. From the fishy taste I would say they were the dead ones. This restaurant used to be the finest in Connecticut. How unfortunate that it has been reduced to less than mediocre.

The best restaurant in CT...from the romantic atmosphere to the flawless food. Everything I've ever had has been delectable. Yes it's expensive, but it's worth it for a special occasion. *everything* on the menu is homemade - they smoke their own trout for an appetizer, make all the bread, etc.
