Upscale boutiques and artisans' studios fill the chiefly 19th-century buildings along Chester's quaint and well-preserved Main Street. Chester sits on a portion of the Connecticut River that has been named "one of the last great places on earth" by the Nature Conservancy and is the starting point of the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry, which crosses the river in a grand total of five minutes.
