It's only an hour's drive to Durango, but this family-owned and -operated guest ranch, nestled in the Upper Pine River valley, on the borders of the Piedra and Weminuche wilderness areas, might as well be a lifetime away. The riding programs are the main attraction here; guests are individually matched with horses to fit their experience and comfort level. Other activities include hiking, rafting, waterskiing, and fishing. Cozy log cabins, complete with gas stoves, modern baths, and terry robes, are arranged in a semicircle around the main lodge, campfire ring, and pool; Cordon Bleu-trained chefs are at the helm in the dining room, which has views of the mountains and busy hummingbird feeders through large picture windows. Pros: very friendly owners, family friendly, gorgeous setting. Con: minimum stay required.
